Our Interview With PLNU Volleyball’s Jolyna Salas
Welcome Jolyna Salas, a freshman setter at Point Loma Nazarene from Vista, Calif. A four-year letter-winner at Tri-City Christian, Jolyna earned First Team All-League honors each season and brings a determined spark to the court. Beyond the numbers, she’s known for her leadership, love of beach volleyball, and appetite for travel. Let’s dive into what fuels her game and what’s next for this rising star.
How did you know that volleyball was your sport?
It was just the feeling that I got when I was on the court. When I was playing, it was as if nothing else mattered in the world. That feeling of passing the ball and setting the ball just gives me shivers. I just knew.

What made you choose PLNU?
Definitely the community. I love how it's faith based, how all the women are so amazing. It just pushed me to be a better person and a better woman of God, too. And obviously, the program is so good. And definitely John, he's such a good guy. He's amazing.

During the season, how did you build on your highs and work through your lows?
I just dug into my team and tried to build that connection with the girls, because that's truly what it's all about. I tried to stay in the moment, stay present, and soak everything in for my freshman year.

When you hear the crowd go wild, what runs through your mind?
Pure bliss. It's such an amazing opportunity to be able to play at a collegiate level. I can't even explain it.
What is your favorite fan moment so far?
Ooh, probably our super fan. He always goes crazy. He wears wigs and swings his shirt around.
An athlete’s life can be nonstop. What do you do to ground yourself when things get crazy?
I like to take a moment and just breathe. I’m into breathing exercises. I realized that I worked my whole life for this, so I don't let it get too chaotic. I remember that I go to school by the beach. It's a blessing that I go here. I really soak it in. I have amazing opportunities in front of me, and I am thankful.
