In this issue - What a whirlwind of highs this week, led by the San Diego Wave FC making history as the champions of the first-ever North American World Sevens Football Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Point Loma Nazarene volleyball kept the ball rolling with three wins in three days to move on to the NCAA DII Elite Eight, while local DI and II basketball teams UCSD, USD, SDSU, and PLNU all won this weekend. Impressive. SDSU track added to the weekend buzz by hosting an electric all-comers meet. The lone heartbreak came for USD volleyball, which bowed out of the NCAA Tournament in a grueling five-set battle against Kansas State.

⚽ Champions! Wave FC Win World Sevens Football Tournament

The Wave FC won five matches in three days and took home the championship trophy of the first-ever North American World Sevens Football Tournament in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The Wave FC scored 15 goals while giving up only three. In the final against Mexico’s Tigres UANL, the Wave won off of Adriana Leon’s brace and forward Makenzy Robbe’s fourth goal of the tournament, tied for the second-most in the competition. Gia Corley earned the Breakout Player of the Tournament award and goalkeeper DiDi Haračić received the Golden Glove.

🏐 NCAA Volleyball Tournament Updates

🏐 Point Loma NCAA West Regional Champs, Move on to Elite Eight

Point Loma won three games in three days to advance to advance to Thursday’s Elite Eight matchup in Sioux Falls, S.D. versus Bentley. Their first round was their toughest: Point Loma defeated Cal State San Bernardino in a wild ride, 20-25, 25-15, 25-15, 19-25, 21-19. Although the fifth set is first to 15 points, a team must win by two. PLNU had 5 consecutive match points but could not close out, then CSUSB had one of their own before PLNU won three straight to survive. Whew. They won the next two matches in four sets.

🏐 USD Downed in Five Sets by Kansas State in Round 1

Despite losing a heartbreaking five-setter to Kansas State in Round 1 of the NCAA Tournament, the Toreros have plenty to celebrate. They were a perfect 18-0 in conference play, and earned their 27th bid to the NCAA Tournament. In end-of-season awards, Jennifer Petrie was recognized as the 2025 WCC Coach of the Year, junior outside hitter Nemo Beach the 2025 WCC Player of the Year, senior Olivia Bennett was the 2025 WCC Libero of the Year, and sophomore Kylie Munday was the 2025 WCC Setter of the Year. HSSD is already ready for next year!

🏀 Here a Win, There a Win: UCSD, SDSU, USD, and PLNU basketball all won this weekend

SDSU (5-3) earned a win over Pacific on Sunday’s Filipino Heritage day. Naomi Panganiban turned in 17 points and three others scored in double figures: Kennedy Lee (14), Nat Martinez (12), and Nala Williams (10). Read more here.

USD (4-6) defeated Utah State 70-66 with freshmen leading the way. Olivia Owens dropped 25 points while Ayla Williams recorded her second consecutive double double. Williams notched 18 rebounds to go with 14 points on the night. Read all about it.

UCSD (5-4) cruised past Long Beach State on Youth Day, 75-45. Rosa Smith and Erin Condron combined for 46 points and 11 rebounds.

Point Loma is averaging 72.1 points per game and winning by double digits. They exerted their dominance over Jessup in their first PacWest conference game of the season, 81-60, and followed that performance with a win over Fresno Pacific, 67-56. Three starters are averaging double digit scoring on the season: Ruby Vlahov 14.1 Hannah Golan 12.3, and Izzy Navarro 12.4.
