TRENDING TODAY:

The Kansas City Current beat Angel City FC 1-0 on Saturday in the NWSL quarterfinals, and a disputed penalty decided it. Michelle Cooper scored from the spot in the 96th minute, early in extra time, at CPKC Stadium.

The call came on a set piece. The referee ruled that Angel City goalkeeper Angelina Anderson pushed Current defender Kayla Sharples inside the box. A video review backed the decision, and Cooper buried the kick.

Why it matters: the loss ended Angel City's 10 game unbeaten run, the longest in the league. Kansas City, the No. 4 seed, moves on to the NWSL semifinals and stays tough to beat at home.

Angel City interim coach Leif Smerud was not happy. According to the Athletic, Smerud called it "a tremendously cheap penalty." Captain Sarah Gorden said she had never seen that foul called on a goalkeeper protecting her own space. She also said she would not use it as an excuse.

There was respect on the other side, too. Current coach Chris Armas opened his press conference by congratulating Angel City. He said it was a shame one of the two teams had to go home.

For Cooper, the moment called for calm. With the season on the line, she stepped up and scored. For Angel City, it was a hard way to end a strong run. The team came in as the hottest in the league and now heads into the offseason.

What's next: Kansas City will face the winner of Gotham FC vs. Seattle Reign FC, who meet Sunday at 12:30 p.m. ET on ABC. The Washington Spirit host the Portland Thorns later Sunday at 3 p.m. ET on ABC, with the winner playing the Utah Royals.
