SAN DIEGO - San Diego State volleyball (11-6, 6-0 MW) continued their hot winning streak by sweeping (25-21, 27-25, 25-21) University of Nevada Las Vegas (8-8, 2-4 MW) on Saturday at Peterson Gym.
Despite being on the back foot with hitting percentages and team blocks against UNLV, the Aztecs used 10 aces and UNLV’s 11 service errors to secure the win. The Scarlet and Black also had the edge over the Rebels in kills, 35-34.
In the first set, UNLV controlled the net with 5 blocks. However, after five ties and two lead changes, SDSU was able to pull away.
In the second, the Aztecs fended off five straight set points to come back in dramatic fashion from a 24-19 deficit. SDSU went on an 8-1 run to close out the set, 27-25, aided by two UNLV errors, two aces from Ella Schabort and four kills, two each by Madison Corf and Taylor Underwood.
The third set featured seven tie scores and four lead changes. The Rebels led 19-18 when the Aztecs went on a 4-0 run. Despite UNLV’s 15-12 advantage in kills, four aces from the Aztecs helped them secure the sweep.
“Even though it didn’t look too bad, if you just look at the numbers right now, we had a pretty poor offensive night,” said SDSU head coach Brent Hillard.
With their sixth straight win, SDSU is tied at the top of the Mountain West conference with Utah State.
“Every team we play, we obviously have a huge target on our back with that zero next to our six,” said Kendall Mairs, SDSU’s freshman setter.
The Aztecs prepare for Grand Canyon University (10-7, 2-4 MW) home at 6 p.m. on Oct. 16 at Peterson Gym. Purchase tickets here or the game will be aired on the Mountain West Network.
