SAN DIEGO - Point Loma women’s basketball opened its home play with authority Wednesday night, overpowering Cal State Dominguez Hills, who entered the night receiving votes in the national Top 25, with a 73–48 victory at Golden Gymnasium.

The Sea Lions (1–0) had four players in double figures and shot a blistering 53.7% from the field, while holding the Toros (0–3) to just 27% shooting. Hannah Golan led all scorers with 20 points and made it a double-double with 11 rebounds. Izzy Navarro followed with 12 points and a game-high five steals. Cassidy Bartolotto and Maddie Mersch each added 11.

A Fast Start and Early Foul Trouble

PLNU raced out to a 14–7 lead behind aggressive defense and quick scoring in the paint. But the pace came with a cost: seven first-quarter turnovers and six fouls.

After the game, head coach Charity Elliott said her constant message from the sideline was simple.

“Please stop fouling.”

She added that the team is working to stay disciplined, especially with a short rotation. “We’re trying to be more mindful, especially when our other point guards are in, to help them in the communication piece.”

Second-Quarter Separation

The Sea Lions broke the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Toros 23-9 and pushing the halftime score to 37-16. Their rebounding dominance (13 boards in the second) powered fast-break opportunities and second-chance looks.

Elliott emphasized that staying out of foul trouble is essential for her roster. “We have to be strategic with our team,” she said. “We don’t have a lot of extra bodies and a lot of extra fouls, so we want to be really smart and I think it comes down so much to discipline and trust.”

Toros Respond in the Third, but PLNU Holds Firm

Dominguez Hills produced its best quarter coming out of halftime, scoring 17 points while shooting 38.5%, but Point Loma matched (and exceeded) them with a 57.1% clip of its own to maintain a comfortable lead.

Golan continued to score at will inside, Ruby Vlahov added nine points and eight boards on the night, and Navarro repeatedly turned defense into transition offense.

Closing It Out

Point Loma stayed efficient in the fourth quarter, shooting 53.8% to preserve the 25-point win. On the night, Mersch and Bartolotto combined for 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting, helping steady the offense as the teams traded physical play in the final minutes.

Though the Toros narrowed the game rebounding margin in the fourth, PLNU finished with a decisive 44–30 advantage on the glass and outscored DH 48–24 in the paint.
