SAN DIEGO – Point Loma Nazarene’s women’s basketball team shut down La Sierra University in the Sea Lions’ exhibition game, 101-24, on Saturday at Golden Gym.

Point Loma demonstrated depth offensively and defensively against the Golden Eagles: every PLNU player scored, and 36 of their points came off of LSU’s 29 turnovers.

In the first quarter, Point Loma shot a blazing 71%, making 12 of 17, while the Sea Lions strong defense held La Sierra to only five points. From the start, PLNU played a full court press, benefiting from quick hands for steals that they converted into points.

By the second quarter, the Sea Lions were up by 23. The team maintained their momentum through the first half, scoring the same number of points in the second quarter, 28, as they did in the first.

Coming out of half time, PLNU held La Sierra to only three points for the third quarter, outscoring the Eagles by 20. Point Loma continued to press and guard close to the half court line. The Sea Lions also demonstrated quickness on the court, creating fast-break opportunities that led to 39 points on the night. Despite the Eagles switching up their defense to a zone to try to slow the scoring, Point Loma adapted quickly and broke the zone with quick passes.

By the time the fourth quarter began, the Sea Lions were already up by 64 points. They scored another 22 to end the game with 101 points. The team continued their strong defense and both offensive and defensive rebounding all the way to the end: PLNU scored 19 second-chance points for the game.

Point Loma’s top scorers were Hannah Golan (20), Ruby Vlahov (17) and Izzy Navarro (13). Navarro also led the team in steals with five while Cassidy Bartolotto led the team with 12 rebounds.

Point Loma heads to Long Beach State for another exhibition game on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale here.
