For just the fifth time in league history, the Shield will be determined the final week of the season. A San Diego Wave FC draw today keeps them alive, but only just. The Wave now sit at 55 points, three behind Gotham FC (58) who won today, with one game left. Washington’s loss leave them at 52, and they are out of the race.

The math is simple and unforgiving. The most the Wave can reach is 58, which only equals Gotham’s current total. A tie or win for Gotham ends the race and Gotham take the Shield.

For the Wave to take the Shield, the Wave must win next week and Gotham must lose. That outcome leaves both teams level on points, and the tiebreakers take over.

The first is goal differential, then most total wins, then most goals scored. After today, Gotham’s goal differential is +14 and the Wave’s is +13, so the margin of victory next week could matter.

If Gotham ties (59) or wins (61), the Shield goes to Gotham. A Wave tie (56) or loss (55) also ends it.

Bottom line: the Wave need to defeat No. 14 Bay FC, then hope No. 6 Utah Royals can upset Gotham, then win the tiebreaker.
