Chula Vista, Calif. - This past weekend, the inaugural MaxPreps flag football showdown brought together some of the top high school programs in the country at the Chula Vista Elite Athlete Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif.
Leading into tournament weekend, local teams were faced with an extreme heatwave that sidelined practices for multiple days; however, the San Diego-based programs persevered despite the heat. With the two-day showdown concluding on Saturday, Sept. 12, national powerhouse JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano) claimed the inaugural title with a 21-6 victory over Newport Harbor in the championship game.
San Diego programs delivered impressive performances throughout the event, showcasing their elite talent and momentum-backed teams.
San Marcos Knights
Ranked No. 2 in the region by the San Diego Union-Tribune, the San Marcos offense broke loose on Day 2, claiming a 21-6 win over the Sac-Joaquin CIF Section champions Sacramento McClatchy. Junior Miyah Holmes, a standout two-way player, powered the Knights with two rushing touchdowns and three sacks on defense, while quarterback Finlee Hovis backed them up by completing 9 of 13 passes for 131 yards. The Knights also pulled off an intense 7-6 overtime win against San Ramon Valley.
Carlsbad Lancers
Carlsbad nearly pulled off the upset of the weekend, just falling short against nationally ranked No. 3 Newport Harbor in a 14-13 thriller. Despite the loss, Georgia Hawk made a standout play for the Lancers, stretching out in the end zone for the touchdown grab to keep them in the game.
Mission Hills Grizzlies
Mission Hills had their talents on full display for the duration of the weekend, defeating Kalispell (Mont.) Glacier 32-7 before pulling out a dramatic 13-7 win over Roseville (Calif.) West Park, which included a final-minute touchdown.
Torrey Pines Falcons
Torrey Pines also completed a solid tournament run at the MaxPreps Showdown, finishing with a 2-1 record. They ended the weekend with an exclamation point with dominant 36-0 and 24-0 shutout wins against Glacier and local San Diego team Del Norte respectively.
Ultimately, JSerra capped off their undefeated 15-0 season with the trophy. Locally, however, the big takeaway from the weekend was the way the tournament proved to be a launchpad for San Diego flag football. Resilient performances from programs like San Marcos, Carlsbad, Mission Hills and Torrey Pines demonstrated their ability to go head-to-head with elite state and nationwide competition. Two other local teams, Bonita Vista and Del Norte, also competed well against ranked teams. With clutch plays and game-changing talent on full display throughout the weekend, the tournament highlighted the thrilling future of Southern California flag football and opened the door for more local teams in the future.
