SAN DIEGO — One of Us, the city’s first sports bar dedicated to women’s sports, had its grand opening on Thursday. Located in North Park, the bar was co-founded by Kalani Millsaps, Kerry Pierce, and Patricia "Jersey" Sebold, all passionate sports fans and friends who struggled to find a place to watch women’s sports.
"We would go to bars, and unfortunately, they would not play it,” Sebold said to CBS8. “They would not highlight it, or we would just literally have to pull up our phones and watch it from our phones.”
The owners of One of Us set out to change the precedent that other sports bars set, and the atmosphere during the grand opening was electric. People from all over San Diego came to celebrate the new dedicated space and connect with fellow women’s sports fans. Lines were around the block all day and into the evening as people wanted to gather to celebrate One of Us.
Before the public ribbon cutting, North Park Main Street Association, City of San Diego Assembly Member Chris Ward, and representatives of several city, state, and federal offices shared proclamations and excitement.
Then, on behalf of the three owners, Pierce took the mic. “With our bar, we want to give women’s sports a place that they deserve to be watched, and we do it with all of you. This is for every one: men, women, families. If you love sports, you belong here,” she said. “One of Us is more than a sports bar. It’s a movement. Together, we’re not just watching history. We’re making it.”
Alongside local fans of women’s sports, many of San Diego’s influential figures also attended, including soccer legend Shannon MacMillan, who played for the US Women’s National Team for more than a decade, winning the 1999 World Championship and gold at the 1996 Olympics.
The three women’s Division I head basketball coaches in San Diego attended, too.
“I'm emotional because I I feel like this is a long time coming,” said SDSU’s head coach and 2025-26 Mountain West Coach of the Year Stacie Terry-Hutson . “For a group of young women to prioritize women's sports in the way that they're doing here at One of Us is just monumental for … our community, the movement, and for the future progress of all women's athletics.”
“Being here for One of Us is awesome,” said second-year University of San Diego head coach, Blanche Alverson. “It shows the support of women’s sports here in San Diego and so we’re excited that there’s a place that is supporting all of us as well.”
Heidi VanDerveer, head coach of UC San Diego's women’s basketball, attended in the late afternoon, after the team’s practice. The team is coming off of two straight Big West Championships.
Spencer McLachlin, head coach of UC San Diego women’s volleyball, also attended on Thursday. McLachlin joined the Tritons in December 2025 and hopes to bring new life to the Tritons this fall.
“I think this is a really cool opportunity to just continue to promote the movement of everyone watching women’s sports,” McLachlin said. “We’ve got three major Division I schools in San Diego represented, and I’m so proud to be a part of it.”
Besides the good company, the bar’s high ceilings and giant fans kept attendees cool as they escaped the San Diego summer heat. The bar served a variety of beverages, including signature cocktails, draft beer, wines, mocktails, and other non-alcoholic beverages. One of Us also has a full menu of food items, specializing in pizza. Aside from food and drinks, there are multiple sports-themed arcade games for people of all ages to enjoy. And, of course, ten large screens are spread across the space so that every seat provides an opportunity for patrons to watch their favorite women’s team.
Although One of Us is typically open every day of the week except for Monday, the extraordinary success of their opening weekend has necessitated some changes this week. The long lines that draped around the building all weekend are what the owners call “a good problem to have.” In order to reset and restock, they have fewer hours this week.
