LAS VEGAS - After a full weekend of competition in Las Vegas, the Women's Open Division of the U.S. Futsal National Championship crowned a champion at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center. For the San Diego Sockers women’s team, the matches were about more than a tournament; they were about representing Southern California in women’s professional indoor soccer.
Competing in the U.S. Futsal National Championship, the Sockers entered the desert with the ultimate goal of making a statement. As the professional women’s division of the storied Sockers organization, the newly formed women's team traveled to Nevada to test how San Diego’s dominance on the turf translates to the technical, high-speed pace of Futsal.
Building Towards Vegas
The team's groundwork and preparation for the tournament goes back to early this year. The Sockers W team showcased their command early on this season, starting in March with a 2-game exhibition sweep of the Empire Strykers Women.
The team dominated in the first matchup with a 5-1 victory at Frontwave Arena before showing resilience in their second game with a late comeback to earn a 4-2 win and secure the sweep.
Making Their Mark
Throughout the four-day tournament, the team faced elite opponents in the Women’s Open division. Their tournament run began with two challenging matches against NextGen Futsal and K1 Football Club; however, their perseverance paid off throughout the rest of the weekend.
The Sockers secured their first victory in a 4-1 win over SF Elite Star on Saturday night. The team then put an exclamation point on their weekend in Las Vegas with a high-scoring 7-2 win against Invictus Futsal on Sunday morning, solidifying their status as a rising professional force.
The team’s strong performance in Las Vegas also earned individual recognition, as three of their players were selected to participate in Saturday’s all-star match: Allison Luo, Ashley Nick, and goalkeeper Brittney Viboch. Their selections highlight the impact of the Sockers throughout the tournament, both as a team and through these individual performances.
For Nick, the weekend was about more than just individual recognition. With Futsal being a new experience for many members of the roster, she spoke to the tournament providing a new opportunity to develop and bond with the team. “Takeaways from the weekend are SD Sockers W are here to compete,” Nick said. “We learned more about each other, and it was a beautiful opportunity to finely tune the identity we want to have as a team.”
Investing in the San Diego Brand
A key pillar of the San Diego Sockers women’s team has been their expansion of the Sockers brand and their investment in the future of professional arena soccer in San Diego. As they continue to grow their brand and reputation in the world of professional women’s sports, the Sockers have put an emphasis on inspiring the next generation of female athletes in San Diego.
In April, the team hosted a clinic for young girls at Frontwave Arena for about 40 young players, bridging the gap between their professional roster and aspiring youth players. That community connection is a big part of the vision the organization has for the future. “We’re not just building a team. We’re building a pathway,” said Assistant Coach Briar Van Slyke. “Through youth clinics, community outreach and relationships with local clubs, we’re creating opportunities for girls to stay connected to the game and see a future for themselves in women’s indoor soccer.”
By competing this week in Las Vegas, the organization is showing young girls that there is a pathway to the professional indoor game right here on the West Coast. For this coaching staff, the goal extends beyond the immediate success of the team. “We’re building something that’s bigger than wins and losses," said Van Slyke. "The San Diego Sockers have set the standard for excellence in indoor soccer through the success of the men’s program, and we’re proud to be the newest addition to that legacy.”
Looking Forward
As the 2026 National Futsal Championship concludes, the San Diego Sockers W team returns home with more than just tournament experience. They come back with a reinforced identity, a team playing the highest level of arena soccer in Southern California. With the continued support of the coaching staff, players and Frontwave Arena community, the goal of a fully professional, championship-caliber team appears to be closer than ever.
