In this issue – The Wave snapped their scoring drought, SDSU soccer kept their streak alive, and UCSD volleyball pulled off a crosstown upset. Add in the Super Girl Surf Festival and a Big West honor for UCSD cross country, and it was a standout week all around.

The Super Girl Surf Festival delivered on all fronts: surfers from all over the world traveled to Oceanside, music rang out from the big stage, kids played beach sports, and so much more. Congratulations to surf champion Costa Rican Leilani McGonagle and finalist Alyssa Spencer from Encinitas.

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Wave FC (8 wins, 6 losses, 7 ties) and Portland Thorns (8-6-7) ended in 1-1 draw on Saturday at Providence Park. Midfielder Savannah McCaskill scored the Wave’s first goal since August 16. With five games remaining in the regular season, the Wave are currently in fifth place in the NWSL standings. The top eight advance to the post season.

🏐 Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic Offers Upsets
SAN DIEGO - Bragging rights will have to wait until next year’s Jack Talmadge Volleyball Classic. The University of San Diego Toreros, UC San Diego Tritons, and San Diego State Aztecs took turns beating each other. The teams finished 1-1 against each other.
The Aztecs defeated the Tritons on Thursday in four sets to kick off the Classic. USD then stymied an SDSU comeback on Friday to win in five sets. The Toreros weren’t so fortunate with UCSD on Saturday. USD failed to convert a match point, UCSD took advantage, and the Tritons earned their biggest win of the season, maybe ever. (Oh, Yale played, too, and their fans really showed up. For the curious minds, Yale defeated UCSD in five, SDSU in three, and lost to USD in four).

⚽ Aztec Soccer Stretches Unbeaten Run to Five
San Diego locals make major contributions.
On Thursday, the team cruised past Nevada 4-0, and tied Hawaii, 0-0, on Sunday.
Against Nevada, Victoria Miller, along with locals Alexis Leath (West Hills HS) and Mia Lane (Eastlake HS) scored, and freshman keeper Kailey Carlen (Learning Choice Academy in Chula Vista) earned her fourth shutout of the season.

🏃♀️UCSD Cross Country
The Big West recognized UC San Diego’s Sylvana Northrop as the Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week after she finished fourth in the 5K at the Texas A&M Invitational, in 17:08.4.

🤺 En Garde!
Congratulations to UCSD Triton fencers Zara Fearns and Pia Huber. Fearns captured the women’s saber crown and Huber won the women’s epee title at UC San Diego’s BladeRunner tournament that drew more than 800 competitors.

⏱️ Timeout Terminology
Cutback: A cutback is a classic surfing maneuver. It’s performed by carving the open face of an oncoming wave, using an arcing motion to bring the surfboard back around. This brings you to the point where you can rebound off the whitewash, ideally before the wave breaks. Source: Rapture Surf Camps
