LAS VEGAS – After being swept by the No. 3 seed Cowgirls just under two weeks ago, No. 6 seed San Diego State volleyball faced them in the first round of the Mountain West Conference tournament on Wednesday. The Aztecs returned a sweep to Wyoming (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) in a massive upset to continue to the semifinals.
The Aztecs fought to get into the tournament, securing the sixth and final spot on Saturday, the last day of conference play, by sweeping Fresno State.
Against the Cowgirls, freshman setter Kendall Mairs returned to play after being out for multiple games. She and Sarena Gonzalez shared setting duties as they have all season when both players are healthy.
Madison Corf set the Aztec offensive tone early and kept the pressure on Wyoming. By the end of the night, Corf hit 15 kills and .440 hitting percentage while Talea Mitchell had 11 kills.
“I guess we’ve learned from our lessons being here before, so we’ve dealt with a lot of adversity and it hit us again today,” head coach for the Aztecs, Brent Hilliard said after the game. “Our team has found a way to win, no matter the circumstance.”
Natalie Hughes went down in the third set, grabbing her ankle, later returning to the match. However, Hughes soon went down again, grabbing the same ankle. She was spotted with the ankle taped and being iced and did not return.
“We came out fiery and hot, and we wanted this win so badly, and we got it,” Corf said after the game.
The Aztecs face No. 2 seed Colorado State in the semifinals today.
Corf explained that losing to Colorado State less than two weeks ago wasn’t fun and the Aztecs plan to come out with the same energy they did on Wednesday.
During the regular season, the Aztecs only played Colorado State one time, and SDSU lost that battle in November in four sets. They also played Colorado State in last year’s Mountain West semi-final game, losing 3-1.
