🎾 US Open Tennis: San Diegan Teens Debut

San Diegans Julieta Pareja and Alyssa Ahn knew they had their work cut out for them when they were scheduled to play No. 9 Elena Rybakina and No. 19 Elise Mertens, respectively.

The teens, ages 16 and 18, made their debuts in the U.S. Open with unlucky draws. Pareja lost to Rybakina 6-3, 6-0. Ahn lost to Mertens 6-1, 6-0.

Regardless of the outcome, the players were excited about the opportunity.

"The work that I have been putting in with my team, it shows that we are on the right path,” said Pareja, a Carlsbad native. "I was fortunate enough to have been born and raised in San Diego. It’s such a special city, not only because of the weather but because of its people. It also gave me the opportunity to practice and improve year-round."

Each player earned $110,000 in prize money for the first-round match, what many predict will be the first of many grand slam tournaments to come.
