University of San Diego’s basketball (1-3) team lost to Arizona State (3-0), 79-47 at the Jenny Craig Pavilion on Thursday.

Both teams played a fast, physical game, pushing the ball on both sides, but the two teams had different playing styles. The Toreros drove into the paint for 18 points whereas ASU was especially strong at the 3 point line, draining 14 on the night. The Sun Devils also had a strong overall game plan, shooting from the outside and in the paint. ASU shot 52% versus USD’s 29% overall.

The Toreros and Sun Devils have new head coaches this year, showing growth and development that new coaches bring to programs.

Despite the score, the Toreros had some bright spots.

USD tied ASU with rebounds with 36, despite the Sun Devils being the taller team. Toreros Malia Tharpe and Eva Ruse led USD with six each.

USD’s Olivia Owens had a career-high, team-leading 14 points. The Toreros also forced 14 turnovers against the Sun Devils, showing quickness and strength. Despite the loss, head coach Blanche Alverson wasn’t disappointed in her team.

“Really proud of our team and how they focused this week after coming off a couple of losses,” Alverson said. “Being able to really prepare and practice, because that’s where it started for us this week. We had three really good practices leading into the game. I know the score is what it is, but I don’t necessarily feel that’s indicative of our effort tonight.”

USD is back on the road at Colorado State (3-0, 0-0 MW) on Monday at Moby Arena, looking for more growth and a win.The game will air on the Mountain West Network.
