SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The University of San Diego Toreros played on their home turf against Weber State, kicking off their 2026 regular season with a statement. The energy on the field was hard-nosed, with USD starting this year with new players stepping up to the plate. The Toreros have an all-time record of 6-9 against Weber State and were looking to narrow that gap.

Sophomore Alex Riggs (Our Lady of Peace) started this game on the mound to start the season. USD escaped a bases-loaded jam in the second inning when a shallow pop-up turned into a lightning-fast double play, and it was Michelle Delgado who stifled Weber State’s best scoring opportunity of the afternoon.

At the bottom of the second, Michelle Delgado continued with this momentum with a massive lead-off triple to right field. Junior Kaylee Oh (Murrieta Mesa HS) capitalized on Delgado’s triple with a clutch RBI single to center. Moments later, Kaitlyn Wynia kept the momentum swinging with an RBI single up the middle to bring Oh home, vaulting the Toreros to a quick 2-0 lead.

Standout transfer Charlie Johnson (Del Norte High) took over for Riggs in the circle and pitched the rest of the game. Weber fought back in the third on Kiaira Smith’s 2-RBI double to right-center that tied the game at 2-2.

A passed ball allowed Weber State to score, which put USD down 3-2. In the fourth inning, senior Carly Ruiz reached on a fielding error, and USD clawed back to level the game at 3-3.

The Toreros broke the 3-3 deadlock in the sixth when Carly Ruiz and Kaitlyn Wynia combined for back-to-back hits to put the go-ahead run at third. Hailey Mulli gan (El Capitan) dropped a shallow fly into right field to score Ruiz and secure the 4-3 victory.

The second game of the doubleheader was a high-scoring battle defined by defensive lapses and a late-inning surge from the Wildcats. Despite USD’s Taylor Johnson launching her first home run of the season and RBI doubles from Hailey Mulligan and Shawnese Hogue-Lacy, six unearned runs doomed the Toreros in a 9-5 loss.
