SPOKANE, Wash. — After a week-long break from games, the University of San Diego’s basketball team (7-13, 1-6 WCC) dropped to the Gonzaga Bulldogs (14-6, 6-1 WCC) on Saturday afternoon with a final score of 87-42.
Last Saturday, USD secured their first conference victory over Pepperdine at Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros dominated in the fourth quarter to edge past Pepperdine. Gonzaga has played well this season and currently sits atop the WCC after winning its third straight.
Gonzaga started the game off strong, outscoring the Toreros 25 to 11 in the first quarter. However, both defenses tightened up with the teams going scoreless for the first three minutes of the second quarter. Guard Kylie Ray led the charge for USD, forcing turnovers and missed shots.
Gonzaga found their offensive rhythm throughout the second half, as they continued to outscore the Toreros. Despite struggling to get their offense going, USD had two double-digit scorers in Ray and guard Hallie Rhodes. Ray led the Toreros with 14 points, alongside Rhode’s 10 points.

USD will look to bounce back on Jan. 22 at 6 p.m. as they head to the Bay Area to play another WCC matchup against the University of San Francisco. The teams played each other on Jan. 2 when USF when by four. Tune into the game on ESPN+.
