SAN DIEGO - Melanie Barcenas gave Wave FC an early lead, but Yazmeen Ryan's second-half goal helped Denver Summit earn a 1-1 draw Friday night at Snapdragon Stadium.

The Wave entered the match trying to avoid a third consecutive home loss after falling in their previous two games at Snapdragon Stadium. Instead, San Diego took the lead in the first half but were unable to hold onto it as Denver responded after halftime.

San Diego controlled 55% of possession and created several dangerous opportunities throughout the match, finishing with seven shots and five on target. Denver recorded 11 shots but managed just two on target.

Barcenas opened the scoring in the 35th minute with her fourth goal of the season. After finding space as Denver's back line dropped, the 18-year-old created a pocket of room before firing a long-range shot into the net.

“I saw the back line dropping and I had lots of time and space and I knew I was centered with the goal, and I had actually just been practicing that yesterday, that exact finish, so I’m glad it got to pay off and show off and put us on the board early,” said Barcenas at halftime. “I think that’s very important for us heading into this next half, it’s something we haven’t been able to do, but I’m super proud to be doing it in front of our home crowd.”

The goal was especially significant for San Diego, which had been shut out seven times this season despite consistently creating opportunities through its attacking players. The Wave also entered the match undefeated when scoring at least once, holding a 10-0-2 record in those games and a 9-0-2 record when scoring first.

Denver found its equalizer in the 58th minute. Yazmeen Ryan finished a chance to score her fifth goal of the season, bringing the Summit level at 1-1. Janine Sonis provided the assist, adding to her impressive offensive contribution this season as a defender.

Barcenas nearly doubled the lead in the 60th minute when she struck the crossbar with her right foot. The forward, who typically favors her left foot, came close to giving San Diego some breathing room.

Ryan had been relatively quiet early in the match, with San Diego doing a good job cutting off passing lanes and limiting her opportunities to receive the ball in dangerous areas. But Denver found more space after halftime, and Ryan's goal gave the Summit new momentum as the Wave looked to regain control.

Sonis has been one of Denver's most dangerous attacking players. Four of her eight goals have come in her last six matches, and her ability to push forward has added another dimension to the Summit's attack.

“It’s a credit to the players around me that allow me to get up and down the pitch, with our right side with Ayo Oke and Yazmeen Ryan, they’re incredibly dangerous and it allows me to come and join on the back post and try to make things happen,” said Sonis. “It’s just a matter of the talent that’s around me that’s allowing me to let my skills come through.”

Adriana Leon found the back of the net in the 70th minute, but the goal was ruled offside, keeping the match tied at 1-1.

San Diego made several changes as it searched for another goal. Barcenas, Trinity Byars and Laurina Fazer were replaced in a triple substitution in the 72nd minute, with Laila Harbert, Gabi Portilho and Tatum Wynalda entering.

Perle Morroni was also replaced in the 83rd minute by Brooklyn Courtnall, who made her Wave debut after joining the team on loan from Bay FC.

The match became increasingly physical late in the second half, but neither team could find a winner.

The result also continued a difficult stretch at Snapdragon Stadium for San Diego. The Wave entered the match with a 4-5-0 home record and were looking to avoid their third straight home defeat. Instead, they settled for a draw.

Eidevall viewed the performance as a positive step, particularly given the team's recent struggles at home.

“All in all...I thought it was a step in the right direction for us as a performance, and I thought it was a step in the right direction for us as a performance especially at home, and something that we can build upon for next Friday against Utah.”

There were still positives for San Diego, particularly in the performance of Barcenas and the team's ability to create chances. The Wave also continued to show the attacking danger they can generate in transition, particularly when Byars can use her speed to attack space.

Defender Kristen McNabb also reached a significant milestone before kickoff, being honored for her 100th appearance for the Wave. McNabb remains the only original member of the team still with San Diego and once again started in the Wave's back line.

Barcenas, who has played alongside McNabb for several years, credited the veteran defender's competitiveness and leadership with helping her develop.

“Every day in training she's so competitive, always aggressive, just a leader in the way she plays...that's even taught me a lot, just playing alongside and being in the same environment with her for the last four to five years.”

The result was also a different ending from the teams' first meeting in April. Denver led 2-0 at halftime in that match before San Diego scored three times in the second half to complete the comeback.

This time, the Wave had the halftime lead but could not find the second goal needed to secure all three points, settling for a draw as the team continues to search for consistency at home.
