HARRISON, N.J. - A second-half scoring drought proved costly for Wave FC on Friday night. Jaedyn Shaw's 44th-minute goal was enough to lift Gotham FC to a 1-0 victory over San Diego at Sports Illustrated Stadium, handing the Wave another setback in the NWSL Shield race.
San Diego entered the match looking to build on its 1-0 road victory over the Washington Spirit, while Gotham sat at the top of the NWSL standings with 37 points in 18 matches. With a win, Gotham had the opportunity to move eight points clear of the Wave with 11 matches remaining.
The Wave came out aggressively, using Trinity Byars' speed to create opportunities early. Byars started after making an immediate impact off the bench against Washington, and her pace caused problems for Gotham's defense during the opening 20 minutes. One of San Diego's best chances came in the 19th minute when Byars delivered a cross into the box that nearly found Lia Godfrey.
Gotham gradually settled into the match and began to control more of the possession. At halftime, Gotham held 58% possession to San Diego's 42%, while both teams recorded seven shots and two shots on target.
In the 44th minute, Jaedyn Shaw found the back of the net against her former club to give Gotham a 1-0 lead. The goal marked Shaw's fifth of the season, while she has also recorded three assists in 16 appearances, making her impact against her former club even more significant.
Gotham's defense made it increasingly difficult for San Diego to respond after halftime. The Wave created scoring opportunities in the first half, but Gotham adjusted defensively and limited San Diego's ability to find Byars with the same frequency.

By the 74th minute, San Diego had yet to record a shot in the second half.
The Wave also dealt with another injury concern involving Kimmi Ascanio. After appearing healthy enough to start Friday's match, Ascanio was forced to leave in the 40th minute and was replaced by Kenza Dali. Dali, who missed the previous match, entered wearing a wrap around her thigh.
Despite the setback, San Diego's defense continued to keep the match within reach. Kristen McNabb and Kennedy Wesley continued as the center-back pairing, having started together in every match this season. Head coach Jonas Eidevall has previously praised McNabb as potentially the team's best player this season, and the defensive unit once again kept Gotham from extending its lead.
Gotham also received a strong performance from goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, who entered the match leading the NWSL with eight clean sheets. The defending Shield winners continued to show why they have been so difficult to break down this season.
Sam Kerr also made her first start against San Diego since joining Gotham. Kerr and Rose Lavelle continued to show their attacking chemistry, with Kerr's heading ability providing another challenge for the Wave defense. Since making her Gotham debut on July 15, Kerr has recorded more headed shots than any other player in the NWSL.
San Diego continued to push for a late equalizer, but opportunities remained limited. Byars left the match in the 79th minute after appearing to deal with cramping, while the Wave earned a free kick in the 87th minute and their first corner in the 89th. Neither opportunity resulted in a goal.
The result continued a difficult trend for San Diego. The Wave have now failed to score in each of their previous six losses, showing just how important finishing has been when the team falls behind.
For Gotham, the victory strengthened its position at the top of the standings. The club entered Friday with 37 points and extended its lead over the teams chasing the Shield. Gotham also improved its home record to 6-1-3.
For San Diego, the 1-0 loss marked a missed opportunity to gain ground in the Shield race. After a promising first half, the Wave struggled to maintain possession and create chances after the break, ultimately leaving them unable to find an equalizer against one of the league's strongest defenses.
The Wave will now look to regroup as the NWSL regular season continues and the race near the top of the standings remains tight.
