From SDSU holding firm atop the Mountain West to UCSD and PLNU reclaiming No. 1 spots, it was a week of statement results across San Diego sports.

  • SDSU did what SDSU does. It won, this time by 28, against San Jose State at home. With 11 straight, Aztecs remain No. 1 in Mountain West. 🏀

  • UC San Diego suffered a loss then bounced back to defeat then-No. 1 UC Irvine and regain the No 1 spot in the Big West. 🏀

  • PLNU avenged a loss and then defeated then-No. 1 Vanguard to take over No. 1 in the PacWest Division II. 🏀

  • USD took advantage of a 16-1 run to defeat Loyola Marymount at the Toreros’ only home game for a 25-day stretch. 🏀

  • San Diego Open men’s and women’s tournaments at Barnes Tennis Center began today. Two locals have already won. 🎾

  • After capturing their first win of the season, San Diego Mojo lost in four at home over the Grand Rapids Rise. 🏐

  • Poll check: Rules in sports change all the time. What is one tennis rule you would change? No five setters at Grand Slams? Five setters for both men and women? One service toss only? No “let” serves on a net cord? Let us know! 👀 🎾

  • Qualifying rounds began today and SDSU’s Jo-Yee Chan won in three sets over German Carolina Kuhl.

  • Coronadan Ryan Seggerman also won his qualifying round over Rhode Island’s Matt Kuhar.

San Diego State

SDSU basketball remains undefeated in conference

  • The Aztecs remain perfect in conference with an 11-game win streak after their 94-66 crushing win over San Jose State. Read more here.

  • Nala Williams was named Mountain West Player of the Week with 20 points, ten assists and zero (yes, zero) turnovers. She is only the third player in the nation to accomplish the feat this season.

Takeaway: The Aztecs 9-0 start in conference play is their best in program history.

Swim and Dive

  • Swim and Dive won their 85th straight dual meet (that’s an eight-year record, people!). The latest casualty was USD. Read more here.


    Takeaway: The Aztecs are hunting their fifth consecutive Mountain West Conference title.

University of San Diego

USD basketball defeats Loyola Marymount

  • USD defeated Loyola Marymount 69-60 off of an elite performance by Kylie Ray who had 26 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

Takeaway: With a new coach and a team that works cohesively, look for their upward trajectory to continue.

USD Tennis

  • USD defeated BYU 6–1 win over BYU on Friday, responding well after a tough test against LSU earlier in the week.

UC San Diego

Tritons basketball has statement win after first conference loss

Takeaway: The Tritons don’t like to lose. They earned a tough win to sit alone atop the Big West conference.

Point Loma Nazarene

Point Loma basketball defeats then-No. 1 Vanguard

PLNU is No. 1 in the PacWest. Shannon Hardy / PLNU Athletics

  • The Sea Lions beat then-No. 1 Vanguard 59-57 to take over first place in the PacWest. Read more here.

Takeaway: PLNU has won six straight and are THE team to beat in the PacWest .

San Diego Mojo Pro Volleyball

Mojo lost at home in four sets to Grand Rapids

  • The Mojo (1-4) could not convert on seven set-point chances in set one. Ouch. Read more here.

  • San Diego scored almost as many total points as the Rise in the four-set loss to Grand Rapids (97-95).

Takeaway: If they can figure out how to win the big points, the Mojo will be a force.
