The Wave will travel to First Horizon Stadium in Cary, N.C. for a 4 p.m. PT matchup against North Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 17. San Diego enters the match in second place in the NWSL standings with 51 points, while the Courage sit in eighth with 42 points and three regular-season games remaining.
With a playoff spot already secured, the Wave will look to maintain its position near the top of the standings and continue its push for the NWSL Shield. North Carolina, meanwhile, needs points to protect its place in the playoff picture.
San Diego enters Saturday’s matchup having won six of its last seven matches and their best record ever, with a 16W-8L-3D record.
In their most recent meeting on Sept. 12, the Wave defeated North Carolina 2-1. Gia Corley and Melanie Barcenas scored for San Diego, helping the team secure a victory despite being outshot 13-9. The Wave controlled 53% of possession, showing its ability to manage the ball and capitalize on scoring opportunities even when the Courage created more chances.
San Diego will look to carry its strong form into the final stretch of the regular season. The Wave ranks first in the NWSL in shots and shots on target while ranking second in passes. Trinity Byars leads the team with 10 goals, while Barcenas and Lia Godfrey have six each.
Despite sitting in eighth place, North Carolina has one of the league’s most productive attacks. The Courage have scored 50 goals this season, compared with San Diego’s 40, making their ability to finish chances a key factor heading into Saturday.
Ashley Sanchez leads North Carolina with 20 goals and is currently the NWSL’s leading scorer. The Wave will need to limit her opportunities around the box.
Evelyn Ijeh is another player to watch. The forward has scored 11 goals this season, giving North Carolina another reliable option in front of goal. With Sanchez and Ijeh leading the attack, the Courage have the firepower to challenge San Diego’s defense if they find space in dangerous areas.

North Carolina enters the match with a 13W-11L-3D record. Its last five results have been inconsistent, with two wins and three losses. A 1-0 victory over Seattle Reign in its most recent match helped the Courage reclaim eighth place.
With the playoff race still tight, North Carolina will have added motivation to take points at home. A win over San Diego would provide an important boost as the team attempts to secure its first postseason appearance since 2024.
North Carolina holds the advantage in the all-time series, with four wins compared with San Diego’s two, alongside three draws.
The Wave’s 2-1 victory in September showed it can overcome that history, but Saturday’s matchup presents another test against a team that has consistently found ways to create scoring opportunities.
San Diego will need to balance its possession-based approach with defensive discipline, particularly when dealing with Sanchez and Ijeh. The Courage’s higher goal total suggests the Wave cannot afford to give the home side too many chances, even if San Diego controls the majority of possession.
At the same time, the Wave’s recent form and attacking depth give it reason to be confident. Byars, Barcenas and Godfrey have all played important roles in San Diego’s scoring this season, while Corley has also contributed key goals during the team’s recent run.
What’s at Stake
For San Diego, a win on Saturday guarantees a top-four finish and home field for at least the quarterfinals. A victory will also continue applying pressure on first-place Gotham FC in the Shield race.
For North Carolina, the stakes are more dramatic. The Courage currently occupy the final playoff position, and teams just below them remain within reach. Dropping points at home would make securing a playoff spot difficult.
San Diego will look to extend its winning run and strengthen its position near the top of the standings, while North Carolina needs points to protect its playoff spot. With the Shield race and playoff positions still at stake, Saturday’s matchup presents an important test for both sides.
